Meet Paul Falzon

Principal Solicitor and Director of Falzon Legal

Where Law Always Starts With Listening

There’s so much more to being an exceptional lawyer than just grasping the law. And that’s something Paul Falzon knows, thanks to a career that’s taken him far beyond the reaches of traditional legal practice.

Before Falzon Legal, Paul ran his own business, worked alongside refugees and the unemployed, fought for better transport for people the system had forgotten, and helped to shape growing communities in Western Sydney.

And in all of those roles, he found people who were battling with hard circumstances, seeking guidance at times when they felt their most vulnerable. He saw that human problems don’t fit into neat boxes, and found that expertise and knowledge mean nothing without empathy.

That’s why, for him, the best legal advice starts with understanding the person sitting on the opposite side of the desk, their hopes and fears, their principles, and what they’re ultimately trying to protect or achieve.

It’s a philosophy Paul sums up simply:

“People love to talk, but they may not always be heard.”

A Unique Path to Law

Paul’s pathway into law was, to put it mildly, unconventional. To be honest, for a little while, he wasn’t even sure he wanted to be a lawyer.

Western Sydney University

When Law Didn’t Feel Quite Right

While studying Commerce, Management and Law at Western Sydney University, Paul was already running his own business, the wonderfully named Techno Boy Computer Solutions. There, he refurbished computers and assisted customers; many of them older people struggling with the overwhelming avalanche of new tech.

Paul really loved that side of the work. Sitting down with someone, working out what was going wrong, explaining the issues, finding the best way to help solve their problems, and seeing the relief on their face when everything was put right.

But, when he had his first taste of traditional legal practice, it was completely different.

The human connection that Paul had found so immensely rewarding in his own business … the joy and reassurance felt by the clients when a problem was finally put right … seemed lost. Instead, he was in a rigid, strict, procedure-driven environment that was miles apart from the people the law was supposed to help.

Consequently, even though he’d studied law, he made the decision to take his career in another direction.

Finding a Rewarding Purpose Elsewhere

Over the next ten years, Paul worked with refugees and the unemployed, managed community services, advocated for people experiencing transport disadvantages, and served in transport policy and planning.

Undoubtedly, it sounds like a particularly unusual and disconnected apprenticeship for a future lawyer. Yet looking back, Paul sees it as totally the opposite.

Those priceless years showed him how to listen, how to see problems from different perspectives, and how decisions made on paper can have real and profound effects on people’s lives. In other words, the exact things he’d found missing in his first taste of law.

He knew in his heart that those lessons were better used inside the profession than outside it. So when his father, a retired magistrate, gave him the chance to work alongside him in 2012, Paul took it. He swapped his local government career for a modest office in Kingsgrove, starting out with little more than a desk and a phone.

Oh, and one more thing, a huge determination to do things differently.

Discovering His Place in Law

Working alongside his father gave Paul the opportunity to learn legal practice from someone with considerable experience, while at the same time discovering what sort of lawyer he wanted to be.

The early practice was broad in its scope. It covered everything from criminal matters to conveyancing, and Estate Planning to Family Law. Basically, Paul and his father handled whatever legal issues came through their door, and gradually built the practice from the ground up.

But over time, a powerful pattern began to emerge.

Paul found himself more and more pulled towards the areas of law where the legal problem was only one part of a much bigger human story: families, relationships, life, passing, inheritance, property and the legacies people leave behind.

Paul and Gordon Falzon

The Beginning of Falzon Legal

After this initial period working alongside his father, Paul took responsibility for developing the practice, incorporating Falzon Legal Pty Ltd in 2015. As it grew, its work concentrated more and more on Wills and Estate planning, deceased estates, Estate Disputes and Family Law.

Yet for Paul, however, these areas were never entirely separate.

A relationship breakdown can affect property and wealth. An inheritance can change family dynamics. Poor estate planning can bring disputes between the people left behind. And, decisions made today can have consequences for children and grandchildren in the many years to come.

Perhaps that was the real destination of Paul’s unconventional journey into the legal profession: discovering that the law works best when you never, ever, lose sight of the people at the heart of it.

Don’t just solve the legal problem in front of you. Understand the life happening around it.

Understanding the Person Behind the Legal Matter

If you ask Paul what he enjoys most about the law, he’s highly unlikely to start talking about Will clauses, de facto separation rules, or estate contest eligibility.

He’ll tell you it’s all about people.

Family Lawyer Parramatta

Paul has a significant interest in genealogy and family history, and really enjoys sitting down with clients, particularly older ones, to understand the decisions and relationships that have moulded their amazing lives.

And those stories matter: why one child is left a specific asset, whether money held by one family member really belongs to someone else, whether someone needs protection, or if something beneath the surface affects what looks like a straightforward plan.

There’s never any judgement about the choices a client wants to make. But, there can be legal consequences, and understanding the whole picture is what allows those effects to be planned for.

Paul wants to hear your story first. Then, and only then, will he help with the law.

I really love learning about people … what they’ve done, the choices they’ve made, and the reasons they’ve made them.

Faith, Service and Community

Falzon Legal follows Paul’s commitment to faith, integrity, and community service. He sees the legal work as a ministry of comfort and guidance, with every day a chance for him and his team to bring a reassuring light into the most difficult or emotionally challenging circumstances.

And that dedication isn’t only for people who have the same beliefs.

Falzon Legal proudly assists people from all different faiths, cultures, orientations, inclinations, and backgrounds. Paul sees loving, caring, and serving people, not judging them, as the Christian path.

What’s more, his community involvement has extended throughout his career and still continues alongside his legal work. Paul is involved with The Sydney Alliance and supports organisations including the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Canteen and Aid to the Church in Need.

Beyond the Office

Away from his desk, Paul is a voracious reader, avid traveller, and active member of the Parramatta Chamber of Commerce, BNI, and the Worldwide Independent Lawyers League (WILL).

His passions are vast, from gardening to mentoring and DJ-ing to cycling. He also has a massive, curious streak that’s seen him diving into AI-assisted music and game design.

But above everything else, he describes himself as someone who loves learning. That’s learning about people, about why they make the decisions they do, and about how to help them plan for what matters most.
